Maasailand

For those of you who are interested, I’ve been in Tanzania at the Cradle of Love baby home near Arusha for the past two weeks and change. It’s been interesting for sure, lots of holding and feeding babies, playing with toddlers, trying to get through the day with as little snot and spit on me as possible. There’s a few spitters who make this difficult, but they make up for it by being excessively adorable. I try not to play favorites, but Neema ends up riding my shoulders quite a bit. I haven’t taken a lot of pictures around the baby home itself, but on the various excursions we’ve taken outside, the camera has come out with a fair degree of regularity. There’s also some new kite aerial photography shots from the trip to the bush to visit the Maasai. If you have a Pro Flickr account, the high-resolution panorama shot from the kite is pretty neat. I suspect that through August at least, my Flickr photo stream will be much more interesting to subscribe to than my blog’s feed will be. Consider adjusting accordingly.

    Sporkmonger-

I live in Malawi, just south of Tanzania and am working on a very exciting project that uses a Rails app to guide health care workers through the process of HIV treatment. We’d love to show you around and get some expert Rails guidance if you ever make it to Malawi!

    Check out our website: www.baobabhealth.org

    Mike,

That’d be really interesting, and I’d love to drop by, but unfortunately, I suspect it wouldn’t work out. I’m with two other people, and they’d likely have to tag along if I came, and one of them has significant responsibilities here that she has to meet. Expert rails guidance, however, is never further than an email away!

    Mike,

I talked to Brendon Church at ADRA, and he was familiar with Baobab Health and recommended that I consider the offer more seriously. I talked to the other people I’m here with and they were down with the idea of me going off on a side-trip to Malawi. So, I guess I was a bit too hasty.

We’ve scheduled a trip to Dar for this weekend, so if I do go through with the trip to visit you guys, it’d have to be sometime after that.

Can a visa be obtained on arrival? Is it the usual $50 USD? Suggestions regarding travel method? We’re in Arusha and it looks like it might be an excessively long trip via bus. What are the prices on air fares likely to be like?

    Hi Bob,

Been a few months since you left and was wondering how you are doing. I got a nice job in Dar that I’m excited about in Project Development for the Coastal Group. Fun stuff…

    Hey Brendon,

I’m doing well. Finishing up a client project and working on some framework code mostly. Just got myself a snowboard, so I’m looking forward to the winter.

    Congrats on the job!

What an adventure, how exciting to see that there are folks who are still taking time away from their personal lives here in the wonderful U.S. of A, and going to beautiful places as this place is, and doing things out of the kindness of their hearts. We need more of God’s Angels like around. Thanks for all that you do and for sharing everything with us here. Regards, Allison
